First off, the title.
Who are they trying to fool?
It's reminiscent of a dirty old pedophile looking at a prepubescent girl or boy and saying with a filthy sly "There's a cutie." With an expression that lingers too long in the wrong areas. With a creepy vibe.
WTAF.
What is wrong with the general public? Even the vaunted New Yorker stooped to defending the film, calling it sexual "empowerment."
The girls in the movie are ELEVEN - 11 - years old. That's one-one.
One year older than TEN.
Sexual...what!?!?!? Is the NY author a pedo too? Jesus Christ. The film's backers defended it and demanded the critics watch it.
So they did. And?
They screamed IT'S WORSE THAN WE PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT (they're right).
11 year old CHILDREN gyrating and pounding their hips into the ground? GIRLS. Slapping each other's butts AS they gyrate? It's what called "posing" the kids, by the authorities and psychoanalysts. And in this case, far worse: sexually lewd dancing and suggestive body movement. It's like asking Kim Kardashian or some very curvy woman to wear a slinky outfit and move along the ground like a snake... It's not a silly little game... it's sexually alluring, and it's done for a purpose - something ALL ADULTS understand.
The defense of the movie is comically ridiculous. And the spin put on it, equally ridiculous: that the movie is a narrative condemning the sexualization of children. This is like saying I'm going to demonize rape by making a movie in which women are horribly raped: illustrating the horror of it by.... committing the crime itself.
Uhhh.... I'm afraid it doesn't work like that. We don't illustrate the horrors of war BY ACTUALLY KILLING LIVE ACTORS. And we don't exploit children to reveal how they are exploited.
First off, this movie has no "ah ha" moment where you, the viewer. understand the kids were exploited or someone in the film sees the folly in what they are doing. Secondly, a movie like this can be made.... by 21 yo actors who look young and are playing 15-17 yo adolescents. THAT WASN'T DONE HERE. The actors were either 11 or only SLIGHTLY older - NOT in a position to make an adult decision about what they are doing.
The director - an African woman living in France - is a kind of pedophile.
In this case, using the girls, posing them, dancing them about, this gives her a sort of power - she controls what she thinks men want, she exercises power over the girls and gains a satisfaction that way, and in all ways feels more powerful than she otherwise would. If you accept men like young women, and some may even fantasize about teenage girls... then this "director" has something akin to that - very young girls (beyond the limits of what is a "sexy girl" in my view, these are children, and NOT sexy in any way), that she is making do sexually playful things and, in a way, teasing and taunting men who like that, as well as tempting them (again, for the men into that sort of thing), even sadistically reveling herself in this power.
In times of riches or chaos pedophiles come out of the woodwork. They always pitch the same garbage - rationalizing their disorders. It's a "see, you like this too" (no, we don't), attempt to fit into the mainstream. Or it is an attempt to pass off their bizarre fetish as a normal trait: "see, this isn't out of the ordinary or strange" (yes, it is). Every attempt they make to blend in their disgusting fetish instantly stands out for what is: bizarre sexual attention aimed at children.
The director and all adults involved, including those at Netflix need to be arrested for creating and distributing child pornography.
Now.
They should also be hit with the MAXIMUM sentence allowed under the law. This is wholly unacceptable. That society has even allowed this film to be made is horrifying and unforgivable.
